The Bright Spots Indicators
How we find out what makes looked-after children happy
The Bright Spots Indicators summarise what children and young people told us was important to them during focus groups and interviews across England.
The ‘Indicators’ focus on four key areas - or domains - that emerged from our discussions with the young people and a review of existing literature on the subject. The four areas are:
- Relationships: keeping and developing the relationships that are important
- Rights: Participating in decisions, understanding rights and being free from abuse and discrimination
- Resilience-building: learning how to manage the challenges in life
- Recovery: coming to terms with what has happened and feeling valued
Each area or domain has a set of criteria or ‘Indicators’ - the things that children and young people told us were most important to them.
Your Life, Your Care survey
The information gathered about the ‘Indicators’ informed the development of our online survey Your Life, Your Care. The survey is a tool for local authorities to measure the wellbeing of the children and young people in their care.
